apple-iphone-3gApple released iPhone OS 3.0 today which is a significant upgrade that will add features and stability to your iPhone.

To install the update, simply connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes. You must have the latest version (8.2) of iTunes installed in order to proceed with the update.

After launching iTunes 8.2 and plugging in your phone, your iPhone should appear in the left column of iTunes under the "Devices" heading. Click on it, and you should see a white screen on the right, with a gray area in the middle. You should now have two options, "Check for Update" and "Restore". Click "Check for Update" and follow the on-screen instructions to update your iPhone to the latest 3.0 operating system. Make sure to keep your USB cable plugged in during the entire update process.

Some of the enhancements I have noticed so far with the update:

  • Camera application takes pictures much faster. Apple has also added a small icon to the left of the shutter button that shows you a preview of the last photo you took. Scrolling through the Camera Roll seems much faster and smoother than before.
  • Battery meter now shows a numerical display of your battery charge percentage along with the old graphical battery meter.
  • A new screen is added to the left of the home screen that allows you to search your entire iPhone.
  • Caller ID now has location! Below the phone number it will tell you the city and state the caller is calling from.
  • A new app called "Voice Memos" is added giving you the capability to record voice memos.
  • Safari seems to browse webpages faster, and does not crash as often as before.
  • Copy and Paste is now available. Apple must have listened to the criticism of many users complaining about the lack of copy and paste features.
Overall, I am very pleased with the new 3.0 operating system features and I would recommend everyone to update at their earliest convenience.
